Holy Family Hospital features comprehensive inpatient medical/surgical units and 24/7 emergency services at both locations, outpatient services, a Level II Special Care Nursery, and Adult and Geriatric Psychiatry. Both campuses provide ample parking, and our Haverhill campus offers all private rooms. Our Methuen campus offers a state-of-the-art catheterization suite, a Joint Commission certified Advanced Total Hip and Knee Center of Excellence and stroke care that has earned American Heart Association’s Get With The Guidelines®-Stroke Gold Plus Target: Type 2 Diabetes.
The two Holy Family hospitals have a long, storied history here in the Merrimack Valley. When what is now Holy Family’s Methuen campus first opened as a hospital in 1950, it was named Bon Secours to honor the commitment of the Sisters of Bon Secours, who were called to staff that hospital at its inception. What is now Holy Family Haverhill was first the municipally owned Hale Hospital, which first accepted patients in 1901. In 1984, the Hale moved to a new building on Lincoln Avenue where Holy Family Haverhill is today. The hospital was mismanaged, and the city sold it in 2001 to Essent Health Care. It was renamed Merrimack Valley Hospital. In 2011, Merrimack Valley Hospital was acquired by Steward and three years later, the Haverhill location merged with Holy Family Methuen. They have been operating as separate campuses ever since. Lawrence General Hospital purchased Holy Family Hospital from Steward on Oct. 1, 2024 following Steward’s bankruptcy proceedings.
